FORWARD CAMPAIGN

Our past

God has been faithful and good to Armitage. Founded in 1963 as a storefront congregation in Humboldt Park, the small church had grown to about 100 but dwindled to 25 in 1974 when they called Charles Lyons as their first full-time pastor. By 1978, growth pressed them to move, setting the stage for a pattern that has not ceased since. By faith the 125-member congregation purchased the 54,000 square foot Logan Square Masonic Temple in 1981. Many wondered what all of the space could be used for, thinking that it could be rented to other congregations. But that never happened: as soon as a room was renovated and ready, a Bible study or ministry would put it to use.

Spiritual progress has practical, physical ramifications. Armitage has had opportunities to purchase suburban buildings, but is committed, with its urban focus, to ministering in Chicago and the cities of the world. More than 40 nationalities are represented on any given Sunday. We have a thriving Spanish congregation, and recently launched a Swahili Ministry to help reach Chicago’s East African community. Several satellite locations are being nurtured near the north, west, and south sides of Chicago. But as we grow, we are faced with either renting expensive space or moving forward with expansion.

Our future

Armitage church is committed to being a church of such size and strength that we impact Chicago and the cities of the world with the gospel of Jesus Christ. Therefore, it is our desire to start 50 new multi-ethnic congregations in Chicago and additional congregations in cities around the world. Some of these are already well-established. Our goal globally is to start or support churches in 100 cities. We are partnering, through our missions program, with over 25 church planting pastors and missionaries in five continents.

Locally, we plan to acquire 50,000 additional square feet of building space to meet immediate needs. The new Millennium Hope Center, at 2510 N. Linden Place, will include a full-sized gymnasium, locker rooms, classrooms, meeting facilities, and a full kitchen. This physical space will allow us to continue to grow spiritually, making disciples and taking full advantage of the prospects God has placed before us.
